Shrek is a 2001 American computer-animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation and released by Disneytoon Studios. In the film, an ogre named Shrek with a Southern accent is kept prisoner in a tower by an author. After failing to make him behave, she writes him with his own personality, making him the hero of her storybook in which he must save his family from a fire-breathing dragon. A sequel was released in 2004 called Shrek 2 and three prequels followed: Shrek Forever After (2010), also directed by Vicky Jenson, which takes place after the events of the original film;and Shrek 3D (2013) and Puss in Boots (2011). Afterwards a fourth film titled Shrek 5 was also announced. However, in 2016, the film was scrapped due to the loss of rights to the character. A Far Far Away remake went into development hell and a second sequel called Shrek Forevermore was planned, but never took place. In 2019, a fifth film is being made which will be made up of two movies titled Shrek Goes Fourth and Shrek Goes on Vacation with Mike Mitchell as director.Shrek is an ogre who lives in an over-themed façade filled with fairytale parody characters such as Princess Fiona's parents and her three little brothers who are locked in a tower guarded by a dragon. Shrek is disgusted that he has to rescue the fairytale characters from the dragon. He is intimidated by the thought of having to spend time with them for they are all "the fairest in the land".Shrek encounters Rumpelstiltskin, who, after hearing of Shrek's plight, tells him that there was a gnome in his swamp sharing a story about how he'd found a princess and gave her true love's kiss. The gnome says that while there may be other princesses in the world, he knows that she is one because she was wearing a chipped bracelet when he found her. Shrek realizes that the princess is Fiona after remembering her wearing a bracelet which was chipped when they first met. He tells Rumpelstiltskin and the gnome his plan to rescue Fiona and they both bring him to their house and tell Shrek about a nearby toad who can grant wishes. The three go out to find the toad, but Shrek slips into a mud puddle and loses his footing in an attempt to get close enough to it.Meanwhile, in the castle, Fiona's father, King Harold is reading one of her romance novels when he hears Fiona return from her trip. He looks out the window only to see that she isn't there. He asks his assistant what happened and he tells him that she never came back. He asks the adviser about her and he tells him that she was reading in her room when she just vanished. Meanwhile, Shrek and Rumpelstiltskin are still looking for the toad. They find it but are knocked unconscious by it. When they wake up, they find the toad is now a lady who tells them that all of their wishes have been granted with the exception of Shrek's. She explains that she had already granted "Her Alness" multiple wishes but he refuses to tell her of his wish so he is not considered "a worthy subject".
